Planning a children's party can be as much
fun for the parents as it is for the guest of honor. After you decide on the size and type of party you wish to
have, the following checklist can be adapted to fit the chosen theme.
1. Snacks or desserts that the kids will like. Finger foods are easy to
fix, serve and clean up afterward. Pizza is a favorite of most children.
Be sure to find out about any allergies or special dietary needs of the
guests. Even small children enjoy helping to choose what treats to serve.
2. Goody bag - Children love to explore the contents of a goody bag and
they like having something to take home with them. The treasures don't need
to be expensive. Several small items are usually more valued than a single
more expensive favor. Be sure to choose age appropriate items as prizes.
3. Balloons - A party just isn't complete without balloons, but be sure to
place them out of the reach of small children.
4. Personalization - Be sure
the birthday boy or girl's name is printed big and bold for all to see, either
on a banner or on the cake. This makes younger children feel especially
important and is also a nice touch for photos.
5. Disposable camera - Be sure to have a camera on hand for any unexpected photo
opportunities. With most groups of active children, a disposable camera is a
better choice than an expensive camera. You may wish to have an
extra camera for the birthday boy or girl, so they can take photos of the guests as
they arrive. This gives them something to do while waiting for the party
to begin. For parties with older children, you may wish to supply several
disposable cameras so they can all sharing in "capturing the moment".
6. Special invitations - The invitations set the mood for the party to come and
can help build excitement. Even if standard fill-in-the-blank
invitations are included with a purchased party plan, having personalized
invitations relating to the theme is a nice touch. They also make a
nice keepsake for the parents and grandparents to include in their photo album or
scrapbook.
7. Activities - An
increasing number of parents are choosing to have their party directed by a
commercial establishment, which usually has a specialized attraction or activity.
Make sure that it is appropriate for the ages of all of the children
involved. If little brothers and sisters will also be at the party,
remember that a small difference in age can make a big difference in actions. Games and
activities don't have to be organized, but there should be plenty of room for
the children to move around safely.
8. Last, but certainly not least . . . Plenty of adult supervision.
The
parents of the birthday boy or girl want to be free to watch the expressions and
actions of their child, so it is helpful to have other adults in charge of
monitoring the activities of the group.
Although the list above has proven to be popular with kids and adults, remember
that every child is different, and when it comes to your son or daughter . . .
YOU are the expert. If you plan with the wants and wishes of your child in
mind and make the comfort and safety of your guests the number one priority,
your party is sure to be a success. |
