Daffodil Theme Parties

Nothing says SPRING like the sight of daffodils just beginning to bloom.  Daffodils rival roses as a favorite flower choice, but although weddings are often based on a daffodil theme, the flower is usually overlooked as a possible theme for other parties. Below are a few of our favorite party events featuring daffodils and jonquils.

Daffodil Party
If you are lucky enough to have a yard or garden full of daffodils, consider having a Daffodil party as an annual event.  Your guests will be anxious to get together to welcome spring, and nothing is more beautiful than a field or bed of daffodils.  If gardening is not your hobby, you can still share the beauty of the season with friends and family by attending a daffodil festival together. Daffodils festivals are held throughout the United States, and can be a perfect outing for a small group of friends.  Bring cameras so you can take plenty of photos and plan to stop at a tea room or favorite restaurant for lunch to make the day complete.

Daffodil Exchange
For clubs and ladies groups that meet monthly, a daffodil exchange is a perfect theme for the spring months. Have each member bring an inexpensive or handmade item relating to daffodils for a gift exchange.  You can also use the items for a silent auction or other fundraiser if you wish. Offering a prize for the most creative or most beautiful daffodil items is a fun way to promote group participation.  Daffodil paintings or poems can be printed in your monthly program or provided as a separate handout.  (See poem by William Wadsworth below.)

Daffodil Tea
One of our favorite daffodil themed parties is a Daffodil Tea.  This type of tea is enjoyed by adults or young girls and also works well with groups that include both age groups. Traditional tea sandwiches, scones and fruit make a tasty menu, and lemon flavored desserts make a pretty display.  Use yellow or pastel colors to contribute to the spring-like atmosphere.  Decorate with either small pots of daffodils or single daffodils tied with yellow ribbons and let each guest take one home as a gift.

Daffodil Painting Party
A daffodil painting party may be the perfect excuse to get together with friends.  Provide enough basic paint supplies or colored markers so your guests can experiment with painting the favorite flower of spring and make your artist friends welcome to bring their own supplies.  Simple instructions on "how to draw a daffodil" are available online, so be ready to give a quick lesson to any guests that aren't sure how to begin.  You may be surprised at how many of your friends actually consider themselves artists, and those that don't usually have fun trying unsuccessfully to create a masterpiece!  A painted daffodil invitation is the perfect choice for this type of event.

Invitations
Daffodil invitations vary in style from elegant formal designs, to brightly colored humorous cards.  Foil daffodil invitations are the most popular choice for weddings and bridal showers. A painted daffodil invitation which includes a scripture verse is perfect for communions, confirmations and other spring religious services.

Daffodils
by William Wordsworth

I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced, but they
Out-did the sparkling leaves in glee;
A poet could not be but gay,
In such a jocund company!
I gazed—and gazed—but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:

For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.
